Gartenbau-Versicherung reviews damage in horticulture 2022
The frequency and extent of natural disasters continue to increase due to climate change. The resulting weather extremes also affect horticultural businesses and their production.

According to Gartenbau-Versicherung, horticulture was hit in 2022 by severe weather events, especially in France, Italy and the Netherlands. The storm trio Dudley, Eunice and Franklin, which swept across Germany, France and the Netherlands for several days in February 2022, caused hundreds of losses totalling 11 million euros. Another regional focus was the Italian west coast, which was hit several times in summer by severe storms, including tornadoes. Here, too, claims payments ran into the millions.
After storms, hail was the second most frequent cause of damage in 2022. In France in particular, many panes of glass were broken, for example in June around the densely populated horticultural centre in Orléans. 7 million euros were paid out to the affected businesses after this single event.
This balance shows how important it is to have a broad regional spread of horticultural insurance members. This is the only way to guarantee affordable and good protection. And this is why Gartenbau-Versicherung is now active in eight European countries, including France, Italy, the Netherlands, Greece and, most recently, Poland.
The strong growth abroad has also enabled Gartenbau-Versicherung to further expand its qualified claims teams outside Germany in 2022. "A claim in Alsace is handled just as quickly and professionally as in the neighbouring Baden-Wuerttemberg," emphasises CEO Christian Senft. "Because our high standards of service apply everywhere, and we help every member in an emergency quickly, competently and personally."
