King Charles III and President Steinmeier plant in honor of the Queen
On September 8, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II passed away, and many people in the United Kingdom, around the world and also in Germany mourned her death and paid tribute to her life's work. In her memory, King Charles III and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier planted on March 29, 2023, a Fraxinus ornus in the park of Bellevue Palace.

The planting of this tree ties in with "The Queen's Green Canopy" initiative, which honored Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Throne Jubilee last year. In Germany, too, trees were planted in her honor in Berlin, Hanover, Hamburg, Bremen, Munich, Düsseldorf and Paderborn as a contribution to an environment worth living in and as a lasting legacy of the Queen's 70-year reign. After the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the initiative was continued at the request of her patron King Charles III and found its honorable conclusion in yesterday's tree planting. The Federal Association of German Nurseries BdB as a project partner is the guarantor that the appropriate tree is selected for each location according to its location. Particularly in view of the clearly noticeable climatic changes, the selection of trees is of special importance.
"I am particularly pleased that our successful campaign "The Queen's Green Canopy in Germany" is now coming to a truly royal conclusion. Yesterday, King Charles III joined German President Steinmeier in planting a Manna ash tree in Bellevue Palace Park. A new generation of trees that we have planted in six German states will now enrich our lives and those of our children and our children's children, in the spirit of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her son, His Majesty King Charles III. I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank from the bottom of my heart the Bund deutscher Baumschulen e.V. (Association of German Nurseries), which has so generously supported us as a partner throughout the campaign," explains British Ambassador Jill Gallard.
"It was a great pleasure and honor for us to implement the initiative together with the British Ambassador, to enrich it with the special products of our members and to experience the enthusiasm of the people at the plantings all over Germany. And we are proud that the tree we donated in Bellevue Park will be a growing joy - for nature and the bond between our peoples," explains Markus Guhl, BdB General Manager.
