The sector, representing 8% of total plant production and 5.3% of the nation’s agricultural value, encompasses around 20,000 companies with a total cultivated area exceeding 45,000 hectares.

Regional Performance

Tuscany remains the national leader with €1.014 billion (+3.5%), accounting for 55% of Italy’s nursery market. Liguria follows with €462 million (+3.8%), maintaining its position as the “Queen of Flowers,” while Sicily ranks third with €313 million (+3.7%). Other top contributors include Lombardy (€287 million, +3.6%), Lazio (€196 million, +3%), Campania (€189 million, +1.4%), Puglia (€178 million, +2.2%), Emilia-Romagna (€157 million, +1.3%), and Veneto (€139 million, +5%). Piedmont closes the top ten with €89 million (+3.3%), just ahead of Friuli-Venezia Giulia (€88 million, +4.9%).

According to Myplant, all Italian regions have recorded year-on-year growth in production value.

By macro region, Central Italy accounts for 39% of production (€1.26 billion, +3.5%), Northern Italy 38% (€1.23 billion, +4.1%), and Southern Italy 23% (€760 million, +2.8%).

Expanding Global Reach

Exports reached €1.62 billion in 2024, up 6.3% in value and 9.5% in volume (Crea-Istat), with 70% of production destined for foreign markets—the majority within the EU (78%). Italy remains the world’s third-largest exporter of floricultural products by value. The first quarter of 2025 alone generated almost €500 million in exports.

Imports rose to €888 million (+30%), but the sector continues to maintain a solid trade surplus, confirming its role as a key representative of Made in Italy excellence on global markets.

Industry Outlook

“Despite challenges such as climate variability, rising energy costs, growing imports, and emerging plant diseases, Italian producers continue to demonstrate strong innovation, quality, and resilience,” said Valeria Randazzo, Exhibition Manager of Myplant & Garden.

Next Event

The 10th edition of Myplant & Garden – International Green Expo will take place from February 18 to 20, 2026, at Fiera Milano-Rho, reaffirming its position as a major international event for the floriculture, gardening, and landscaping sectors.
