Selecta one has successfully implemented its RCS 2.0 propagation system in collaboration with Colombian carnation producer Colibri Flowers. The project marks the next phase in the global rollout of the technology, following earlier commercial launches in three major markets. With deployment across diverse production environments, RCS 2.0 transitions from an innovation initiative to a fully operational solution.

RCS 2.0 is a substrate-free propagation system in which cuttings are rooted offshore in biodegradable paper bags with minimal energy input. The rooted cuttings are delivered in compact paper strips and can be potted manually or through automated systems. The approach is designed to streamline handling, reduce labor input and improve uniformity.

The commercial trial was conducted at Colibri Flowers’ facilities in Colombia under standard operational conditions. Four hard-to-root carnation varieties were tested. According to the company, substrate-free rooting with RCS 2.0 proved highly viable and delivered improved rooting results compared to conventional methods. Additional reported benefits included vigorous initial growth and a reduction in crown rot and node elongation, attributed to the cleaner and more sterile system environment.

Operational gains extended beyond rooting performance. The system reduces material use and waste volumes while improving transport and storage efficiency. Higher density per basket and reduced material volume enabled improved space utilization in rooting benches and optimized internal logistics planning.

Both partners describe the collaboration as mutually beneficial. Growers gain efficiency, lower substrate dependency and streamlined processes, while Selecta one receives practical validation and feedback for further system development. The company states that RCS 2.0 and related production processes are protected through a patent portfolio. In addition to integrating its own genetics into the system, Selecta one intends to offer licensing options.

Colibri Flowers, founded in 1987 and based near Bogotá, produces standard and miniature carnations, spray carnations, Kiwi Green flowers and red roses for international markets. Selecta one operates globally as a breeder, grower and marketer of ornamental plants across bedding plants, houseplants, perennials and cut flowers.
